The Mission of The Baltimore Group
The Baltimore Group discusses, develops, and advocates progressive politics with the mission of enacting progressive social, economic, and political policies, electing progressives to public office, and stemming the growth of the regressive conservatism that has entrenched itself at all levels of our government.
Both offensive and defensive methods for effecting change are available to TBG. By joining the dialogue about the current state of our country and the direction in which it is heading, TBG hopes to deepen and strengthen progressive thought and serve of one of many backs on which a progressive renaissance can stand. This positive contribution is coupled with a defensive goal of exposing the hypocrisy and obfuscation that often lies at the heart of conservative attacks and justifications. Finally, TBG understands the financial requirements that a reinvigorated progressive movement will have to meet. As such, TBG will, when possible, endorse and contribute to candidates and causes that further the progressive ideal.
About The Baltimore Group
The Baltimore Group (TBG) was founded December 2004 as a discussion forum among friends who graduated from The Johns Hopkins University. Finding themselves spread across the country but joined by a shared biley Election aftertaste, the group stumbled upon Blogger.com’s simple toolset and launched an online paper group meant to help fill the void left by professors and classrooms.
Ambitious in its purpose, but limited in its motivation, TBG gradually shed active writers. The public forum, it seemed, was less appealing to many of the Group than email treatises and late-night barroom discourses. Today, TBG has a number of satellite contributors who write on specific issues, engage in behind-the-scenes briefings, and generally serve as the personal consultants of TBG’s two full time members, Austin Evers and Matt Browner Hamlin. TBG channels its energy primarily into its blog project, Emboldened, which provides commentary, analysis, and debate on current events, national security, domestic policy, and the development of a more perfect Union. TBG is also engaged through Bring It On! and the Roots Project.
