It’s been a week since Joe Lieberman handed Democrats a stinging defeat in the Connecticut senate race against progressive candidate Ned Lamont. The loss still hurts, but I’m sure the Lieberman campaign staff (or as Matt Taibbi calls them, Lieberfuckers) are holding up their legal responsibilities to file all the proper paperwork for their receipts and disbursements of campaign funds so all will be kosher with the FEC.
I know that this wasn’t entirely clear during the primaries (hopefully you didn’t misplace $387,000 in petty cash on the streets of Bridgeport again Joe), so I thought I’d provide an example of how your books are supposed to look. And to remind you that these burdensome FEC requirements aren’t just there for campaigns like yours, but also organizations that do independent expenditures in support of campaign, I’m copying some of the Virginia Democratic Party’s record keeping for their expenditures on get out the vote workers in support of the Webb campaign. This data is taken from the 24 Hour Notice, Form 24, Schedule E and is dated November 6th, 2006. I’ll give five examples, but there’s plenty more there for your review at this link.

So what do you say Joe? Can you give us and the FEC the details on where your campaign cash went this time around? Care to tell us what you did with $387,000 in petty cash just before the primary election?
You and your campaign have a legal obligation built out of a desire to have transparent, dignified elections governed by rule of law to report where every cent of your campaign funds was spent. You failed to do that in the primary and you’re under FEC investigation because of it. Don’t make the same mistake in the general election. Tell us the truth and maybe you’ll escape further investigation into your dubious use of cash on the streets of Connecticut.
And Joe - if you don’t mind me borrowing one of your favorite alliterations, asking you to play by the same rules as the rest of America isn’t partisan, it’s patriotic.
