I'm actually not a fan of counterfactuals like that. No one is going to give Saddam back the reins of power, so it's not worth even considering such a line of thought.

Iraq is pretty fucked right now. But we're still there and as long as we're there, we have to take responsibility for improving the situation. Once we're gone, we have to help international institutions and coalitions to support the emerging government from afar.

The conversation-stopper, when any criticism of American conduct in Iraq arose, used to be, "Oh, and does that mean that you think they were better off under Saddam?" It's pretty clear by now that the answer to that question should be a resounding "YES!"

The Iraq reconstruction is winding down . . . so there is no need for new contracts to replace the existing,” Foster said.

I'm sure the Iraqis in Baghdad who only have power 5-10% of the day will be happy to hear that our reconstruction is almost complete. We've spent a hell of a lot money to leave with inadequate infrastructure in place. The money has gone to Halliburton, KBR, Custer Battles, and other companies who have profited immensely from a war effort that has failed to preserve the reconstruction projects from damage. It's just a mess.
