I was giddy as a school girl when I saw the number. It was like sweet manna from heaven. The clouds parted, the sky cleared, and things were suddenly starting to look right in the world.
100% right on with the quotes. Let’s see them finally used in reference to the GOP.
Or better yet, let’s toss all the insider pundits who have repeatedly dumbed down debate with these lies and start having a real debate about how we can make this country great again. Enough of the days where the only people who can improve their lot are the investor class. Enough lies, mistrust and spying. Enough of the Republican agenda and Republican talking points.
Bush should resign so the country can just move on and fix ourself while we have something left to fix.

I have never seen such ignorance.
Have you checked out the economy ? GDP growth,
unemployment, home ownership, net worth of families
- all at the historical highs for our country.
Minority home ownership and net worth all
at their highest levels EVER - and you want the
President to resign ?
Obviously, you need an education and a mentor
to help you stop listening to the media elite.
May 12th, 2006 at 7:46 am
Frank - I’m sure your not a Bill Clinton fan. I’m sure you think he didn’t do anything of value and a great economy fell in his lap. Likewise I’m sure you think it taking Bush five years to crack the level the economy was at when Clinton handed it over to him is no sign of a failure.
I’m guessing you came her from the WSJ trackback, so it doesn’t surprise me that you as a self-proclaimed captain of industry think the economy is the be all and end all in assessing the worth of a president.
I’ve never once claimed the economy was a reason Bush should leave, though you can’t argue with the hurt being put on the middle class. I couldn’t care less - economies ebb and flow and almost none of it is directly connected to a president’s performance. You can’t have it both ways - either Clinton was an economic genius and you’re happy with the job Bush is doing, or Clinton had nothing to do with our largest economic expansion in history and Bush can’t take credit for what we see today.
Bush should resign because we can’t have a radical as our president. We can’t have a president who refuses to obey the law. We can’t have a president who states publicly he has no intention of stopping his law-breaking. We can’t have a president who lies the nation into a preventive war.
If you think the economy is as important as the Constitution, it is you FRank who needs an education and a mentor. Oh and what part of the “media elite” has said Bush should resign? Provide me with one link - try supporting one of your opinions with documentation.

Dear Frank,
Look, Man, it is OK to make a mistake. A lot of other Americans made the same mistke - 2x no less. Let’s close this sad chapter
in our hsitory and move on. BTW, for those calling for impeachment, forget about it. it sin’t possible with the Repblicans in charge
of all 3 branches of government and I would hate to see us devolve into some sort of French mess
Besides, Americans gget the government they deserve. Maybe this will be the time for us to reflect on how
how screwed up our system has become and what we can do to fix. A suggestion would be to know the issues
and know who we are voting for.
I am looking forward to see Dubya break through 25%. That is the low water mark for Carter and I’m sick of
hearing smug republicans always trot Carter out as proof of Democratic incompetency. At least the guy had
something to show for his 4 years in the presidency. Dubya has zero.
As to Frnak’s claims about Dubya’s accomplishments I’ll just throw in some of my own W accomplishments:
1. Highest infant mortality rate in the developed world
2. LArgest national debt in US History with exploding budget deficits (never mind that Clinto balanced the budget and
put us on track to pay the debt off.
3. A trillion dollar war in Iraq based on lies and disinformation. We have nothing to show for it whatsoever.
4. Weakened environmetal regulation and enforcement which has set the country baclk decades.
Turns out voluntary participation to promote conservation and environmental protection doesn’t
work so well. Go figure.
So Frank, crank up the Limbaugh, and tune reality out. We’ll wake you up when the nightmare is over. But this thing is such
a disaster that we are going to need everybody’s help.
May 12th, 2006 at 4:55 pm
Gary - That’s a pretty low over/under.
On the one hand, Bush hasn’t been investigated for anything and impeachment isn’t talked about inside the beltway (which as shitty as that sounds for me is a real measure of what’s going on). Rove has yet to be indicted and oil prices haven’t gotten nearly as high as they can be.
On the other hand, 18% is a far way from 29% - though not as far 29% is from 50% in literal terms. 18% means a major hemorrhaging of Republican loyalists. Without serious consideration of impeachment it’s hard to see these numbers continuing to drop.
I can definitely see Bush getting to the 24-26% on his own inertia. Below that, we need a major scandal that fully implicates Bush and though there are some out there now (Plamegate, NSA, Iraq intel), they haven’t gotten there yet. Even if that happens I see him leaving office (end of term, resignation, impeachment - take your pick) having gone no lower than 19-20%.
I take the over.

Hey Philo,
Probably the biggest and best legislation ever passed in the USA was the
tax free gain of 500,000 on a personal residence ( real estate) every 2 years.
Proposed and signed by Bill Clinton. I don’t hear any of the left talk about the give away to the rich - after all only the rich would or could have gains of 500,000 or more. No one talks about this as the MAJOR reason the real estate market has gone crazy - and to think that liberals dont think tax rates effect behavior. Check out the value of your home since that has passed ! He also did a terrific job with the passing of NAFTA and welfare to work. I actually wasnt a big fan, but do think that he did an excellent job in economic appointments and certanly helped the economy. In addition, he was the BEST recruiter the Republican party ever had. Lets not forget the majority of state houses, Governors, the U.S. Senate, House of Reps - and any imaginable elected office holder all became Republican under the watch of Bill Clinton ! Could there have been a better or more effective recruiter ? So you see, I was a HUGE fan of Bill and really hope to see Hillary as President. It is the only thing that is guaranteed to keep a conservative majority in America for many generations to come.
However, lets not forget the Worldcom, Enron, Tyco, and the many unethical business
debacles - all under the watch of Clinton. Not really such a surprise given his
high moral underpinnings ( or maybe he always thought it meant underlings) - fat, ugly underlings at that.
You see, I am part of the middle class - and I see families around me living a wonderful, productive life. They are what makes America great. I dont hear the negative and pessimistic view of our country you hear.
America is to great for small dreams - I would suggest you start dreaming bigger . There is a wonderful exciting country out there with boundless opportunities for any and all to participate.

David,
I agree that the national debt is the largest in dolalr terms - but you have to adjust for inflation and look as a percentage of GDP - under which measure the debt is one of the smallest percentages ever - less than 3%. If you were to consider the same logic to buying a house than no one would ever be able to afford a home until they had 100% of the purchase price.
I recently flew from Los Angeles to the east and asat next to a Captain in the Army - on his third tour - voluntarily ! He had 4 children and was willing to risk his life again because of the greta work he felt he and his men were doing in Iraq. said that AP contacted him to do a story and when he told them of all of the great things they were not interested and hung uup. His name was John Denault. Can you imagine risking your life with children at home because you felt the cause was so just and worthwhile ? Iraqi men and women have freedom. Do you think that only people born in America desire liberty and freedom ? Do you think it was easy when we fought for our freedom and democracy ? Or is it just okay to say we have ours and screw the rest of the world ?
Freedom and liberty have a cost - a dear cost. That is why it is so important to maintain and fight for when given the chance. I have yet to meet a military person in airports and public places that isnt thrilled to be part of our mission in Iraq. Maybe scared - but certainly willing to carry out their mission.
I guess its a good thing folks like those on the left today were not in power during Hitler - or we would all be speaking German. Maybe even French given the high moral ground that liberals place on our French friends.
The Founders fought and many lost their lives in some of the bloodiest wars ever in history for freedom. It didnt happen and become completed in 6 months. In this age of television - you all want to turn on the tv and hear things are over -
Sure is a good thing that tv wasnt around in the 1700’s - guess we would all be part of China or Japan !
May 12th, 2006 at 6:06 pm
Frank -
John Denault is undoubtedly an American hero and it’s a shame the reporter he talked to didn’t want to tell his story.
But in case you hadn’t noticed, the war in Iraq has gone on for 39 months, not 6. Don’t demean our legitimate opposition to the Bush administration’s failures of leadership by pretending that John Denault HASN’T SERVED FOUR COMBAT TOURS! He’s your example and then you degrade the duration of his service. Classy.
So we’d be part of China and Japan because? They fought a war of independence for America in 1776? And that has to do with TV how?
You know you’re really proving the point of my post. It only took you nine comments to equate Saddam to Hitler and Iraq to Nazi Germany. I guess when your boy is at 29% you have to cut to the chase and whip out your big guns. Color me unimpressed.
May 12th, 2006 at 8:08 pm
And what pinhead liberal democrat is going to fix the mess? The problem George Bush has is that he has abandoned his conservative base and they have now abandoned him. George Bush is a moderate at best and a liberal at worst. The reason the poll numbers are low is because most conservatives have abandoned the president. You liberals never did support him and never will.
May 12th, 2006 at 9:24 pm
Hey Philo,
Typical liberal response - you dont respond to facts - but pure emotions. Because in liberal circles and thinking - its how we feel -
results dont matter. cant hurt anyones feelings. Cant have differences… who cares if Bush is at 29% - Do you expect leaders to lead by poll numbers ? John F Kennedy was at the lowest numbers in his presidency when he was killed, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt were despised and considered pure apologists and traitors - only to now be called the greates t leaders of their times.
Stop reading the polls - who cares ? If the polls meant so much, we would have had President Michael Dukakis, President Kerry, President Bob Dole ( he was actually up by 4 points after the convention), and President Dewey - not Truman. Or senator Romney, not Kennedy !
Facts are that there were weapons stockpiled based on Bill Clintons team of inspectors in 1996 - where do you think all of the serin and toxic chemicals went ? That was independent inspectors from the U.N. that verified their existence.
Its easy to be the armchair quarterback when things get tough - and cut and run….but America is made of true grit patriots that are willing to die for the freedom of others. Thank God we dont need to fight an American revolution today - we would just simply send up the white flag and ask how it makes you feel - thats much more important than what we actually do or achieve.
And who mentioned Rush ” Limbo” ?? not me..
May 12th, 2006 at 9:40 pm
Reed - You’re right, Bush has abandoned his conservative base. I just don’t think that makes him a moderate or a liberal (though his nation building campaign in Iraq has taken a turn beyond anything Clinton would have dared). Bush is a radical whose only ideology is that of executive authority. It’s not conservative, it’s not liberal, and it’s certainly not libertarian. It’s selfish and it’s antithetical to America’s constitutional structure.
Gary - Glad to have you join the discussion in the blogosphere. I think you and I probably disagree on the vast majority of our opinions, but hey, it wouldn’t be fun if we agreed.
I’ll put up $100 on your over/under bet. To be clear, I think you’re probably right. Bush won’t get impeached - I don’t see this batch of Dems having the spine to try. Bush also will never resign - that’d be holding himself accountable for his actions and he’s never shown any interest in responsibility. So the time span is the duration of his presidency and if Bush fails to hit 18%, I win. But the moment Bush hits 18% I’ll donate $110.00 to Doctors Beyond Borders. Well, not the moment. If Bush ever hits the teens (let alone 18%), I’ll probably be posting pics of me popping bottles of champagne while holding a laminated copy of the Constitution. Then I’d pay the bet
I actually love the idea of Kinky Friedman. I heard this morning on Imus that he has about 150,000 signatures on his petition to be on the ballot - and he only needed 45,000. Pretty great showing. I hope the citizens of Texas are able to elect a man who isn’t beholden to ANY corporate/party interests.
Gary, check out Americans for Inclusive Debates. It’s a
bipartisannon-partisan group of bloggers who want to see presidential debates opened up to third (and fourth, fifth, and sixth) party candidates. In my view, the biggest problem with politics in America isn’t the ideologies of either party, but the presence of monied interests in both parties.May 13th, 2006 at 12:24 pm

[…] When did immigration control become a military matter? Why did we suddenly come to a realization that our streets were overrun by illegal immigrants, primarily from Latin America? Politics, friends. Low poll numbers and the lack of fear in the voting public. Apparently the gay menace and lurking cave dwellers just hasn’t kept the American populace scared enough to stomach to maintain our president’s popularity. The Guard’s role in immigration will be further defined by President Bush in a speech to the nation Monday night, according to Stephen Hadley, who heads the White House National Security Council. “This is not about militarizing the border,” Mr. Hadley asserted on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” He said the Guard’s role would be primarily in aiding the U.S. Border Patrol in “support functions,” such as providing more intelligence and logistical help.
