I gotta say, Lieberman as Sec Def makes me think "meh." I agree with the political points but why should I believe Lieberman would stand up for the best interests of the US as Sec Def if he doesn't do it as a senator. His sole redeeming factor is that he isn't an avowed doctrinaire neoconservative, which I suppose is big.

Lieberman SHOULD be the next Secretary of Defense or State. Seriously.

A) Though a crappy one, he is a Democrat. He's not Rumsfeld, that's for sure. If we're looking for real change at the White House then Lieberman may be the best we can hope for, even if we disagree with him.

B) He could bow out of his Senate race without being shamed at the polls on Election Day, which will happen if Lamont makes even a strong showing.

C) He does have allies in the Senate and House who he wants to help win. Hillary, Kerry, and Biden (Vomit, Vomit, and Vomit, Inc.) could all draw strength nationally on defense issues.

To be clear, I am considering this from a Bush WH perspective and a hawkish Democrat perspective. He's an ally to both whose effect could be to temper anti-Bush sentiments AND to bolster centrist Democrats.

However, for us it would also help draw a clear line between the Democrats we hate and those that we love. The votes on Lieberman's appointment would be very interesting, indeed.

(I guess it's just a day to vomit in our mouths)
