Taking a brief pause from our Deal discussion, I just remembered something that pissed me off during the 2004 campaign.

Meet the Press had a couple of great guests one night: the Chairmen of the DNC and the RNC. During the discussion, the topic of stem cell research was brought up. In response hearing that Bush opposed stem cell research, the spokesman of the Republican Party blew up that Bush was pro-research, that he was the first President ever to fund such research, and how dare Democrats paint the President as anything but committed to science!

The goal of the explosion? To make Bush seem like he was on the correct side of the issue. Now look at his position. Bush and the Republican Party lied. I’m not surprised, and it’s not that special of a realization, but I remember fuming when I heard it. I guess it’s not flip-flopping if you are trying to deceive people. I mean, at least Bush knew he was lying, while remaining anti-stem cell research on the inside.
