I love this:

The front page on the Washington Post’s website is all Terri Schiavo–people screaming, praying, pontificating. The site seems dedicated to the culture battle that is being waged.

And then, tucked under the Politics heading, is a headline that Congress is going to vote on relaxing stem cell research restrictions. The article is full of quotes from Congressmen about how they are looking forward to an honest scientific debate about the issue.

Really? Are you sure you don’t want to unleash the religious Right on this one? Are they ok with this?

Here’s a nice quote that suggests that this issue is going to be fought bitterly:

“I look forward to the opportunity to help defeat it,” said Richard Doerflinger, deputy director of pro-life activities at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “Then we can set aside this silly obsession and concentrate on things that are actually working for patients.”

My favorite part of the article, however, is the section that reminds us that Bush first slapped restrictions on stem cell research because he didn’t want the government involved. It appears that he’s changed his tune about government involvement these days.

I look forward to a more honest debate about this issue. Stem cell research is gaining public support and states like California are starting to take the issue into their own hands. It is time for the government to invest in this promising field. Hopefully those in power will leave their minions behind.
